Differences Between Friable and Non-Friable Asbestos

What is friability?

Friability of asbestos is defined as the tendency of ACMs or Asbestos Containing Materials to crumble, chip or break down under pressure or due to abrasion. Asbestos Containing Materials that are easily prone to breaking down and releasing tiny asbestos fibres into the air are called friable materials. These materials could be easily reduced or crumbled to powder by a simple touch.

Friable asbestos

Friable asbestos is a type of asbestos that is easily prone to breaking down or getting damaged. And realise tiny asbestos fibres into the air. The percentage of asbestos in variable asbestos is 1% in weight. It could get easily damaged by hand.

Non-friable asbestos

Non-friable asbestos is a type of asbestos that shows higher resistance to abrasion and damages. Therefore, this type of asbestos is less prone to release harmful asbestos fibres into the air. In addition, non-friable asbestos could not be easily damaged or broken down by the touch of a hand. Therefore, unlike friable asbestos, non-friable asbestos alos cannot be disturbed that easily.

Asbestos friability and its impact

Different types of asbestos products contain different asbestos fibre concentrations. This impacts the friability of the products. Therefore, materials that contain a higher concentration of asbestos fibres are more friable and harmful to the health of the people inhaling the air laden with asbestos fibres.

Asbestos products or asbestos-containing materials with less concretion of asbestos fibres are more rigid and less prone to ebay breaking down and damages. Therefore, these products release few quantities of asbestos fibres into the air and don’t pose any serious health risk for people working to remove the asbestos-containing materials.

Friable asbestos examples

Materials used for thermal insulation, pipe lagging, sprayed coatings and insulation boards contain higher concentrations of asbestos fibre and are friable asbestos materials.

Non-friable asbestos examples

Vinyl flooring tiles, bitumen products, textured decorative coatings and cement sheets are the materials that contain fewer quantities of asbestos and hence are less prone to breaking down or damages. Thus they can be classified as non-friable asbestos

Bonded asbestos

In the market, non-friable is also known by a different anime called bonded asbestos. At the same time, friable asbestos is commonly known as non bonded asbestos.
